Building the Robot

Design

I led the design process for the team which began with reviewing all rules and requirements. Next, we brainstormed ideas by ourselves and then collaborated in small teams to come up with ideas for different designs. We then expanded on those designs and voted as a team to narrow our plans down to two main designs.

Prototype

From those two robot ideas we got from the design stage, we split into groups to prototype and test those designs. After carefully prototyping and testing our ideas, we discussed and decided on one final design for our robot.

Build

After finalizing our design, we were able to create a timeline for the build process and make our ideas into a reality. From there, we tested and practiced driving to work out any unforeseen problems.

Community Outreach

Parades/Community Events

We participated in parades to help the community recognize us and we set up booths at community events to fund raise and interact with community members. This allowed us to tell people about the robotics program and inform parents of engineering opportunities for their children.

Engineering Day Camp

I organized a engineering day camp that lasted three days where we taught elementary school students about different aspects of engineering including problem solving, teamwork, and design. It was a great experience for us to reach out into the community and grow as a team.

Elementary School Visits

We visited many elementary schools in the Santa Ynez Valley as we showed the students our robot to spark their interest in engineering.

Teamwork and Leadership

I worked with a leadership team of 6 people to oversee all aspects of our team to ensure that all meetings, events, and competitions went smoothly.

Finances

I was in charge of taking inventory, tracking all finances, communicating with sponsors, collecting dues from the team, writing grants, and thanking sponsors. This taught me about leadership as well as how to effectively keep track of finances.

Public Speaking

Because all of our funding is provided from outside sponsors, I visited many businesses and community organizations to share about our team. We often brought the robot and gave a demonstration after a brief presentation about who our team is.
